  • 1 cup stone-ground grits
  • 4 cups water or chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (optional)
  • 1/4 cup grated cheese (cheddar or your choice)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, bring water or chicken broth to a boil. Slowly whisk in the grits, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Reduce heat to low.
  • Cover and simmer the grits for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thick and creamy. If using, stir in heavy cream for extra richness.
  • Once the grits are cooked, stir in butter, cheese, salt, and pepper. Mix until the cheese is melted and the grits are smooth.
  • Spoon the grits into bowls and enjoy as a side dish or as a base for shrimp, sausage, or other toppings!
